Belgian Sommeliers Guild

Led by president William Wouters, the Belgian Sommeliers Guild has always been a trailblazer for international cooperation and global initiatives. As early member of ASI, the Belgian Sommeliers Guild has been present from the opening chapters of the international sommelier story and the Best Sommelier of the World competition.

Enable sommeliers to shine

As the advocate for Belgian sommeliers, our goal is to promote the art and profession of the sommelier, to bring together Belgian professionals of the highest calibre and to enable them to shine on the national, European and worldwide levels. We make sure young professionals and budding talents have every opportunity to flourish. Every year, we enable both our experienced and beginning wine stewards to compete for the title of Best Sommelier in Belgium. They gain experience, expand their network and potentially add a prestigious title and trophy to their names.

Adding value to restaurateurs

Belgium is not only a beer-brewing country, but also a wine-loving one. To cater to this demanding public of gourmets and connoisseurs, our sommeliers need to deliver them correct information, insight and excellent service. Their ability to do so satisfies their guests and reflects positively on the restaurants or hotels they represent. Therefore, it is our view that sommeliers should not only be present in hotels and star restaurants, but they also have an important role to play in cafés, bistros, or wine bars as customer relations officers.

Flawless event organization

In 1969, the very first World Championship took place in Belgium. Today, half a century later, we hope to restage that first experience with the celebratory 2019 edition of Best Sommelier of the World.. To ensure this year’s contest is an event to remember, we’ve entrusted the organisation to the professional hands of Balthazar Events. With their feel for excellence, their flair for original concepts and flawless execution, it promises to be a memorable edition, full of surprises, that will leave a lasting impression on both the candidates as well as the people accompanying them.
